There is a belief so deeply embedded in product culture that it has achieved the status of axiom: make it easy to use, and users will come. Reduce clicks. Flatten onboarding. Sand down every rough edge until the interface disappears entirely. This philosophy has produced genuinely great software. It has also produced an entire generation of platforms that users abandon the moment something marginally smoother appears on the market.

The uncomfortable counterargument is gaining traction in boardrooms and open-source communities alike. Some of the most defensible, most beloved, and most commercially successful platforms in the technology sector are, by any conventional measure, hard to use. They demand time. They reward patience. They do not apologize for their complexity. And they are winning.

The Mastery Effect

To understand why difficulty can become an asset, it helps to think about what happens after a user survives a steep learning curve. They do not simply know how to use a tool. They have internalized a way of thinking. Vim, the text editor that has frustrated and fascinated developers for decades, is the canonical example. Its modal interface, its cryptic command syntax, its refusal to behave like anything else in the modern software ecosystem — all of these qualities have been cited endlessly as barriers to adoption. They are also precisely why Vim users rarely leave.

The learning process itself transforms the user's relationship with the software. What began as friction becomes fluency. The tool stops feeling like an obstacle and starts feeling like an extension of thought. At that point, switching costs are not primarily financial. They are cognitive and even emotional. The platform created distinct tiers of expertise, and the gap between a casual user and a Figma expert became a professional credential in its own right. That stratification was not accidental. It was a retention engine.

Intentional Friction Versus Accidental Friction

The distinction that platform builders must internalize is the difference between friction that serves the user and friction that simply reflects poor design. These are not the same thing, and conflating them is the most common mistake made when analyzing complex platforms.

Accidental friction is a login screen that times out too quickly, a settings menu buried four levels deep, or an error message that communicates nothing useful. It adds no value. It teaches nothing. It simply wastes time and erodes trust.

Intentional friction, by contrast, is a design choice that slows users down in order to build capability. The Vim user who spends an afternoon learning motion commands is not being punished. They are being trained. The developer who works through the configuration process of a tool like Neovim or a platform like dbt is not fighting bad design. They are acquiring leverage — the ability to do things faster, more precisely, and more powerfully than they could before.

The best platform builders think of this intentional friction as an investment thesis they are offering to users: spend time here now, and we will return it to you compounded. The platforms that communicate this thesis clearly — through documentation, community, and visible examples of expert-level output — are the ones that convert frustrated beginners into evangelists.

Community as Competitive Moat

Complex platforms generate something that frictionless ones rarely do: genuine communities of practice. When a tool requires real investment to master, the people who master it have something to talk about. They share configurations, write tutorials, build plugins, argue about best practices, and mentor newcomers. This activity is not incidental to the platform's success. In many cases, it is the platform's most durable competitive advantage.

Look at the ecosystem surrounding tools like Obsidian, the note-taking application that places significant cognitive demands on users who want to use it well. The community of Obsidian power users is extraordinarily active, producing a continuous stream of plugins, workflows, templates, and instructional content. Each piece of community output lowers the barrier for the next wave of users while simultaneously demonstrating what mastery looks like. The platform benefits from this output without paying for it, and competitors face the daunting task of replicating not just the software but the entire cultural infrastructure surrounding it.

This dynamic maps directly onto how technology adoption actually works in professional environments. Enterprise software purchasing decisions are rarely made by individuals. They are made by teams, and teams are influenced by the people within them who have the deepest technical credibility. When a platform cultivates a class of expert users who speak its language fluently, those users become internal advocates. Their expertise is visible, their recommendations carry weight, and their presence on a team makes the platform feel indispensable.

What Platform Builders Should Take Away

None of this is an argument for making software needlessly difficult. The lesson is more precise than that. Platforms that succeed through intentional complexity share several characteristics worth emulating.

First, they make the destination visible. Users tolerate difficulty when they can see, clearly and concretely, what mastery looks like. Showcasing expert-level output — through case studies, community highlights, or in-product examples — gives beginners a reason to persist.

Second, they invest heavily in documentation and learning resources. The friction is in the software itself, not in the path to understanding it. Platforms that pair genuine complexity with exceptional educational infrastructure give users the tools to convert struggle into skill.

Third, they build community infrastructure deliberately. Forums, Discord servers, annual conferences, and certification programs are not afterthoughts. They are the architecture of the expert community that will ultimately defend the platform's market position more effectively than any feature update.

The simplicity-first orthodoxy will not disappear, nor should it. Many categories of software genuinely benefit from radical ease of use. But for platforms targeting professionals, developers, and domain experts — the people who build things with tools rather than simply consuming them — the friction paradox offers a different and potentially more powerful path. Difficulty, handled with intention and respect for the user's intelligence, does not drive people away. It binds them closer than almost anything else a platform can offer.
